The Bidet: What It All Began, From The Beginning

The bidet was invented over 300 years ago. Since then, technology has advanced leaps and bounds. How did the device come to be? This blog will tell you where and how it began.

The Little Pony

Although historians don't know the exact date or location of the invention of the bidet, it was first mentioned in 1710. In those days, plumbing wasn't invented yet so people only had to wash their clothes once a week. This likely led to a (literal, and figuratively) stink that caused furniture makers in France inventing the bidet.

The original bidet was a small bowl that you could place on your back to help with personal cleaning. The bidet was used in bedrooms as a chamber pot. It was named the bidet because of its resemblance to straddling a pony.

What Changed in the Bidet?

The bidet evolved into a basin with a hand pump that sprayed water into your groin. This was in the middle of the 1700s. The evolution of the bidet slowed down for about 150 years before modern plumbing was developed. The bidet was placed next to the toilet, and used only after you had gone to the bathroom.

Bidets of the Early Modern Era

John Harvey Kellogg was the brother of Will Keith Kellogg and wanted to patent an "anal shower". He described what we now call a modern bidet very closely.

This idea didn't take off until the 1960s. Arnold Cohen, who is now known as "bidet king", had a relative who fell ill and caused pain in the rectal region. Cohen created a device to help his father; in 1964, he invented the first toilet-bidet combination seat. This helped to save space and made it easier to use.

Bidets as We Now Know Them

The first toilet-bidet chair was invented by the bidet king fifteen years ago. In Japan, an electronic bidet was created with a heated seat and a nightlight. In some parts of Europe, Asia, washlets and other electronic bidets are very common.
